Entering Freshmen

Scholarships

To be considered a priority applicant for all University of Tennessee, Knoxville, scholarships, including the Chancellor’s 4-year scholarships, UT General and Alumni Scholarship, and college and departmental scholarships, all entering freshmen must submit the Admission & Scholarship application not later than November 1 of their senior year in high school .  To apply, go to http://vip.utk.edu to create your personalized Vol-in-Progress (VIP) page.  Then you can schedule a campus tour, register for an admissions program, and apply for admission and UT’s competitive scholarships.  Don’t forget to revisit your VIP page for campus updates and status checks.  Please note that, although letters of recommendation are not required for the admission part of the application, two recommendations are required for the scholarship part.

Grants

Grants are a form of need-based aid reserved for students with the highest financial need that do not have to be paid back. To apply for grants it is in the student’s best interest to submit the FAFSA as early as possible. The Expected Family Contribution (EFC) number generated by FAFSA determines eligibility.

Loans

Students must be admitted as "degree-seeking" and must be enrolled at least half-time to qualify for student loans. You must submit the FAFSA to be considered for a student loan.

Available loans include the Federal Stafford Loan (both subsidized and unsubsidized), the Federal Perkins Loan, and the Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS). You may also apply for an "alternative" student loan through a private lending institution (these loans are not part of federal loan programs).
