The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

The first step in applying for grants, federal work study, student loans, and need-based scholarships (Promise & Pledge) is to complete the FAFSA. After the University of Tennessee reviews your FAFSA results, we will determine your eligibility for assistance.

There is a great deal of information that one must keep in mind when filling out the FAFSA (Free Application For Federal Student Aid). The primary thing to remember, however, is that you must complete and submit the FAFSA to qualify for Federal Student Aid.

Start the process here --> www.fafsa.ed.gov

You may begin filling out the FAFSA, save it online, and return at a later time. You are required to have a Federal Student Aid PIN to "sign" your FAFSA electronically. Apply for your personal PIN here --> www.pin.ed.gov

FAFSA Questions

What is UT's Federal School Code?
UT's Federal School Code is 003530

What happens once you complete and submit your FAFSA? The information that you provide on the FAFSA will be applied to a formula by the Central Processing Center. From this formula a number will be generated. The EFC, or Expected Family Contribution, is the end product of the FAFSA. The EFC is located in the upper right corner of the SAR (Student Aid Report). The SAR is simply a summary for the student and their family to review and determine if the information that they reported has been recorded accurately. It is the EFC that is used to determine what type and how much aid a student is eligible for under the federal guidelines.

Questions such as the following, “Am I considered an independent student?”, are addressed in the Frequently Asked Questions or HELP section of the FAFSA website.
