Scholarship FAQ
How competitive are UT scholarships?
The 2009 class of 3,723 entering freshmen had an average core GPA of 3.79 and a 26.5 average ACT score—the highest ever for an entering class. Forty percent of the incoming freshmen had GPAs of 4.0 or higher. There were 40 National Merit scholarship winners in the 2009 class.
How do I apply for freshman scholarships?
To be considered a priority applicant for all University of Tennessee, Knoxville, scholarships, including the Chancellor’s 4-year scholarships, UT General and Alumni Scholarship, and college and departmental scholarships, all entering freshmen must submit the Admission & Scholarship application not later than November 1 of their senior year in high school . Students may apply either through the UT VIP system or through the Common Application. To apply through the VIP system, go to http://vip.utk.edu to create your personalized Vol-in-Progress (VIP) page. Then you can schedule a campus tour, register for an admissions program, apply for admission and UT’s competitive scholarships. Don’t forget to revisit your VIP page for campus updates and status checks. The required scholarship questions will appear in the VIP system as a new tab after the admission part of the application is submitted. The scholarship questions for the Common Application are part of the UT Knoxville supplement. Please note that one recommendation is required for the admission part of the application and that two recommendations are required for the scholarship part.
Am I eligible for scholarships after my first year?
Yes, eligibility for scholarships continues throughout the college levels, and continuing students are encouraged to reapply each year by no later than February 1. Many scholarships are renewable based on funds available and academic performance. The application for the 2012-2013 school year for returning and transfer students can be found here.
How do I find out about the "unclaimed" scholarships I hear about?
The majority of unclaimed scholarships are from external sources. Scholarships with very restrictive criteria are sometimes not awarded until future years. Please check our links page for external scholarship search options.
If I am awarded a scholarship, how do I accept and receive the funds?
Funds from scholarship awards are applied to a student's tuition and other university charges each semester and any excess funds will be available 5 days after the start of each term. Also, students will be asked to accept scholarship and other financial aid offers online.
