Scholarships

The University of Tennessee annually offers over 4,000 awards from over 1,400 scholarship accounts. Scholarships at UT are available from many sources to undergraduate and graduate students. Over $23,000,000 in scholarship funds are awarded annually, with four-year, one-year, and renewable scholarships available.

Students and parents should exercise caution in responding to scholarship search offers from unfamiliar agencies. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) website features valuable information on Scholarship Scams—including how to avoid them and how to report them. If you feel that you have been compromised by such a scam, the U. S. Department of Education Office of Inspector General (OIG) outlines some important information on Identity Theft.

Entering Freshmen Students

To be considered a priority applicant for all University of Tennessee, Knoxville, scholarships, including the Chancellor’s 4-year scholarships, UT General and Alumni Scholarship, and college and departmental scholarships, all entering freshmen must submit the Admission & Scholarship application not later than November 1 of their senior year in high school .  Students may apply either through the UT VIP system or through the Common Application. To apply through the VIP system, go to http://vip.utk.edu to create your personalized Vol-in-Progress (VIP) page.  Then you can schedule a campus tour, register for an admissions program, apply for admission and UT’s competitive scholarships.  Don’t forget to revisit your VIP page for campus updates and status checks.  The required scholarship questions will appear in the VIP system as a new tab after the admission part of the application is submitted.  The scholarship questions for the Common Application are part of the UT Knoxville supplement. Please note that one recommendation is required for the admission part of the application and that two recommendations are required for the scholarship part.

Continuing Undergraduates & Transfer Students

To be considered for general university and academic college scholarships, students should complete the Continuing and Transfer Student Undergraduate Scholarship Application by February 1 for continuing students and April 1 for transfer students. Questions regarding academic college and departmental scholarships should be directed to the appropriate college or department.

Two of UT’s institutional scholarships, previously available only to entering freshmen, will now be awarded to eligible students transferring any semester to UT from Tennessee community colleges. The awards are for a total of two years, and transfer students must have met the original high school qualifications for the awards and must satisfy the requirements for admission to UT. Once admitted, students automatically will be considered for eligibility. No other scholarship application is required.

Effective fall 2008, the Tennessee Pledge or Tennessee Promise scholarships will be awarded, for up to two years, for any Tennessee resident graduating from a Tennessee community college with an Associate of Science or Associate of Arts degree who meets the Tennessee Pledge financial need requirements or attended a Tennessee Promise high school in 2007 or later, respectively.

Effective fall 2009, a new $1,500 transfer scholarship will be awarded for up to two years, for any Tennessee resident graduating from a Tennessee community college with an A.S. or A.A. degree with a minimum 3.0 transferable college GPA.
